Rath Yatra, the world’s largest chariot festival, transforms the holy town of Puri into a sea of devotion. Millions of devotees gather to witness and participate in the grand procession of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra on towering wooden chariots.

When is Rath Yatra in Puri?

Rath Yatra falls on the Gada Yuga of the bright fortnight (Ashadha Shukla Dwitiya) in the Hindu calendar. In 2026, Rath Yatra is expected around July 2026.

The festival spans several days:

1. Snana Yatra (June) — precedes Rath Yatra by a few weeks. The deities are bathed and adorned with fragrant oils and flower petals.
2. Rath Yatra (main day) — the grand procession from Jagannath Temple to Gundicha Temple.
3. Bahuda Yatra (return journey) — 7 days later, the deities return to the main temple.

The Grand Procession: What Happens on Rath Yatra Day

Three massive wooden chariots are built anew each year from specially selected logs:

• Nandighosa — Lord Jagannath’s chariot (45 feet tall, 16 wheels)
• Taladhwaja — Lord Balabhadra’s chariot (44 feet tall, 14 wheels)
• Darpadal — Devi Subhadra’s chariot (43 feet tall, 14 wheels)

On Rath Yatra day, the deities are placed on their chariots and pulled by thousands of devotees through the Bada Danda (Grand Road) to the Gundicha Temple. Key moments include the Pahandi Bije, when the deities emerge from the temple gates, and the Chhera Pahara where the chief priest walks barefoot along the chariots blessing devotees.

By Train

By Air

The nearest airport is Biju Patnaik International Airport, Bhubaneswar (60 km, ~1.5 hours by taxi).

Rath Yatra Dos and Don’ts
