Rituals and Traditions
The Holy Dip (Snana)
The highlight of Kartik Purnima is the pre-dawn dip at Swargadwar. Devotees gather in the thousands from midnight, waiting for the first light of the full moon to appear on the horizon.
Deepadan (Offering of Lamps)
After the holy dip, devotees offer floating lamps (diya) to the sea as a symbolic gesture of surrendering their sins and seeking the Lord’s blessings. You can buy earthen lamps from the beach vendors for ₹10–20 each.
Temple Visits
After the dip, devotees visit the Sri Jagannath Temple for special Kartik Purnima darshan. The temple is beautifully decorated, and the priests perform extended pujas throughout the day.
The Mahaprasad on Kartik Purnima is considered especially sacred. Make sure to receive prasad at the temple.
Evening Aarti at the Beach
The evening aarti at Puri Sea Beach is a moving experience — priests from the Jagannath Temple perform the ritual with 56 lamps, while the sound of conch shells and bells fills the air.
Panchuka: The Five Sacred Days
Kartik Purnima is preceded by a five-day period called Panchuka (Kartika Shukla Panchami to Kartika Purnima). During these five days:
- Special pujas are performed at the temple
- The temple priests offer elaborate bhog to the deities
- Many devotees observe fasting and spiritual practices
- The atmosphere in Puri is charged with devotion
