Witnessing the world-famous Rath Yatra at Jagannath Temple is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. This devotional guide covers dates, etiquette, where to stay, and what to expect during Puri's grandest festival.
The Festival of the Lord of the Universe
Every year, on the bright fortnight of Ashadha (June-July), millions of devotees gather on the Grand Road of Puri to witness something divine — Mahaprabhu Sri Jagannath emerging from his sacred temple on a colossal wooden chariot, accompanied by his elder brother Balabhadra and beloved sister Devi Subhadra.
The Rath Yatra is not just a festival — it is a living tradition stretching back over a thousand years, where the Lord himself leaves his sanctum to visit his devotees.
When Is Rath Yatra 2026?
Date: Thursday, 16 July 2026 (Ashadha Shukla Dwitiya) Location: Grand Road (Bada Danda), Puri, Odisha
The festival runs for 9 days, with the return journey (Bahuda Yatra) on Ashadha Shukla Dashami — when the deities are brought back to the temple.
The Three Chariots
Each of the three deities rides a separately constructed wooden chariot, built fresh every year using traditional methods:
- Nandighosa — Lord Jagannath’s chariot (45 ft tall, 18 wheels, draped in red/yellow)
- Taladhwaja — Lord Balabhadra’s chariot (44 ft tall, 18 wheels, draped in green/yellow)
- Darpadalana — Devi Subhadra’s chariot (43 ft tall, 16 wheels, draped in red/black)
The pulling of the chariots — particularly Jagannath’s — is considered the supreme seva. Over 1.5 million devotees pull the massive ropes every year.
During Rath Yatra, Grand Road becomes a sea of devotees. Our dharamshala is barely 2 minutes from Singhadwara (Lion’s Gate), so you can step out of your room straight into the procession. Avoid booking rooms farther than 1 km from the temple.
Etiquette & Do’s and Don’ts
What to Wear
- Traditional Indian attire is preferred — kurta-pajama for men, saree/salwar for women
- Modest, comfortable clothing (you’ll be on your feet for hours)
- Comfortable footwear that you can remove easily (shoes are not allowed in the procession zone)
Do’s
- Maintain a calm, devotional mindset
- Help pull the chariot ropes if your health permits — it is considered tapas
- Keep your valuables minimal — the crowds are dense
- Carry water and prasadam
- Listen to the ghanta (bells) and mridanga (drums) for devotional music
Don’ts
- Don’t photograph the deities from too close — follow signage
- Don’t push or rush in the procession
- Don’t carry non-veg food or leather items into the procession area
- Don’t argue over seating or rope positions
The temple’s own kitchen, Ananda Bazar, is famous for offering 56 chhappan bhog (56 sacred dishes) to Lord Jagannath. Devotees who partake in this prasad are believed to be cleansed of all sins. Arrive before 9 AM to be sure of a serving.

The Day After — Hera Panchami
One day after Rath Yatra, Goddess Lakshmi comes to the Gundicha Temple in her own decorated palanquin to ask her husband why he left her behind. This poignant ritual — called Hera Panchami — is one of the most emotional moments of the festival.
Closing: The Return — Bahuda Yatra
On the 9th day, the deities return to the main temple. This return journey is celebrated as Bahuda Yatra, and is followed by Suna Besha (golden attire of the deities) on the 11th day.
